Exploring Nature on the East Coast

Resource Details Blog

Eco-tourists, nature lovers and anyone who wants to connect with the outdoors will have plenty of options in Sharjah. Do you have a few days to explore this emirate? We recommend journeying to the East Coast where you can swim in the Sea of Oman in the morning and hike up a mountain in the afternoon.

Day 1 - Journey to the East Coast

Start your adventure to nature by making your way to Khorfakkan on the East Coast of Sharjah. If you are staying in Sharjah City or Dubai, the journey takes approximately  one hour and you’ll experience a flurry of different environments. From bustling city to sand dunes and desert, passing through Hajar Mountains before glimpsing the Sea of Oman.

On your journey, stop at Al Rafisah Dam to take in the beautiful sandstone mountain views. You can take a break at the rest stop, take a wander along the paved pathways, paddle boat in the reservoir or tackle a challenging hike into the mountains. Make sure to look out for wildlife like the Arabian sand gazelle, which lives on an island in the middle of the lake.

Continue along the winding road into the serene seaside town of Khorfakkan and check into one of the many comfortable hospitality accommodation options on offer.  Take the chance to go on a seaside stroll and take in the unspoilt views of the east coast and some of the stunning attractions that Khorfakkan is home to; from the Amphitheater to the man made waterfall tumbling down opposite the ocean. During your stay, make sure to visit the popular seaside restaurants and Al Suhub Rest, a restaurant “in the clouds” situated at an elevation of 600 metres above sea level with astonishing views. Drop into Khorfakkan’s Souq Sharq to wander its quaint corridors and stock up on intriguing souvenirs for friends and family.

Day 2 -  Underwater exploration

Day two is all about underwater exploration. If you are a certified diver, join a scuba dive excursion to one of the many exciting dive sites in Khorfakkan. Shark Island is home to reef sharks, eels and turtles while Inchcape is a sunken ship, now home to colourful fish and corals. Between dives, you’ll get to enjoy the views along the coast of Sharjah and see the majestic Hajar mountains from a different angle. If you are not a scuba diver, opt instead for a snorkel tour - looking down on sea life from above.

After a day in the water, take the afternoon and evening to savour Emirati cuisine, go shopping or relax in your accommodation. Tomorrow is another big day!

Day 3 -  Mountains and mangroves

As you make your way out of Khorfakkan, start the morning with a visit to Shees Park, a rest area and park with spectacular mountain views. In Wadi Shees, you can enjoy the amenities of the park or venture off into the valley following one of the marked hiking trails.

After you’ve absorbed the peace of the mountains, it's time to hit the road South towards Kalba. The destination: the Al Qurm Nature Reserve and Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre. This site is designated an internationally important wetland by the Ramsar Convention, and according to Ramsar, the trees in Kalba are the largest and best preserved in the biogeographic region. The mangrove centre includes educational exhibits, while outdoors you can try to spot the endangered Arabian collared kingfisher or sea turtles along the walking paths.

Before you go:

Are you excited to go on a nature adventure to the East Coast? Before you go, call ahead to reserve your spot with a snorkel or scuba company. Check the weather to ensure hiking is possible, and if high temperatures are predicted, plan accordingly. Visit hiking trails early in the morning or in the evening, and pack plenty of water. And most importantly, enjoy!
