Khor Kalba Fort

Khor Kalba Fort was constructed around 1745 in the 18th century and spans roughly 1,435 square meters. Beneath the fort, you can find remnants of an ancient village that dates back about 500 years, showcasing the long history of the area. The fort itself was built in two phases: the first started in 1755, and the second wrapped up in 1820. This fascinating history makes the fort a significant landmark, reflecting the region’s rich heritage and its role as a defensive structure over the centuries.

Khor Kalba Fort was built around 1745 AD during the 18th century and covers an area of approximately 1,435 square meters.The fort displays a collection of artifacts uncovered during excavations, spanning from the 18th century BC and earlier civilizations. Artifact features include items made from various materials such as ceramics and stone, with some marked with inscriptions and symbols from ancient civilizations. Exhibited metal objects include household items, ships, and locks, on display showcase the fort's historical use and local craftsmanship. Among the notable finds are stone inscriptions, including a rock depicting animal imagery (a sheep and a turtle), Bronze Age vessels, and ancient pottery shards, including a porcelain and a chlorite stone cup imported from Bactria region in Afghanistan dating from 2700 BC.Visitors to the site are also able to view artifacts from the Iron Age, including a stone used for grinding raw copper (dating from around 600-1100 BC), and a small ceramic jar from the early 20th century. 

Restoration efforts to Khor Kalba Fort took place in the early 2000s to revitalize the fort's structure, which had suffered from deterioration and wear. Besides making improvements to the fort's structure itself, sustainable improvements were incorporated into management practices as a part of the restoration to preserve the surrounding Khor Kalba mangroves and coastal ecosystems.
